We have just completed our best sample yet: 2000 hectares of rice, with a minimum of two 1-hour morning/evening surveys at 80 sites on 41 randomly-selected rice farms in the Murrumbidgee and Coleambally Irrigation Areas. We have much analysis ahead.
We’re thrilled to confirm the first known Australasian Bittern chick to fledge from a rice crop. This gorgeous specimen allowed a few snaps before flying off into the night. It may well be one of the fluffy chicks previously snapped and featured in our gallery. It’s great to document what we’ve suspected and hoped: that this globally endangered species can breed successfully in Riverina rice crops.
